Language Centre
In today’s global employment markets and multi-cultural
countries, having a second language is a valuable asset.
The Language Centre offers a wide
range of support for postgraduates
to study English and Modern
Languages in a welcoming and
friendly environment.
Academic English support for
International students
International postgraduate
students are encouraged to make
use of the Academic English
services of the Language Centre
for support and guidance with all
aspects of the language and
academic skills required for
success with their studies.
Specifically developed for
postgraduate students, our
Academic English modules
include writing and research skills,
avoiding plagiarism, handling
large quantities of reading, spoken
expression and understanding
British academic conventions.
Our postgraduate students also
benefit from year-round bookable
one-to-one sessions for individual
guidance.
Pre-sessional language courses
are also available to international
students before they begin their
studies. Courses range from
4 to 16 weeks depending on the
individual language profile of
our students. Pre-sessional
courses typically offer 21 hours
of instruction each week and
include contact with lecturers
from a range of subject areas.

Modern Languages
As part of Keele’s internationalisation
strategy we offer all postgraduate
students the opportunity to join
- free of charge - undergraduate
elective modules offered through
the Language Centre.
Learning a language will not just
help you to communicate with a
wide range of people, but it can
be deeply affirmative and life
enhancing. Employers have
repeatedly pointed out that
successful language learners
demonstrate a highly valued
willingness to adapt to new
circumstances and to think
differently.
Learning a language is the most
fundamental way in which we
come to understand other
cultures, and therefore achieve
a deeper appreciation of our
own culture and ourselves.
Language modules currently
provided:
Academic English, Mandarin
Chinese, Japanese, Russian,
Spanish, Italian, Arabic, German
and French, all offered from
absolute beginners level.

“Studying Italian as an elective module provided me with
diversity in my studies, new friends and useful skills for
future holidays in Italy. However, most usefully, I gained a
new insight for sentence structure and written and verbal
communication, which helped me to improve my writing
skills for my core degree subject.”
