Solaris health & Wellness’ Mission is: To empower people to live younger longer while aging-in-place through an integrated ap- proach to health and wellness. it is the alignment of these missions that led to this strong partnership to serve collier county Seniors with an unprecedented focus on fall prevention while improving the quality of life. according to the centers for disease control (cdc): • Falling once doubles your chances of falling again. • one out of five falls causes a serious injury such as broken bones or a head injury. • Each year, 2.8 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries. • over 800,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture. • More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling, usually by falling sideways. • Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (tBi). according to the u.S. census Bureau, in 2010, people over the age of 65 accounted for 15% of our total population. is will increase to 25% of our population by 2050. during those years, we will experience the following increases in population by age group: • under 65 years old 30% increase • 65-69 years old 76% increase • 70-79 years old 110% increase • 80-89 years old 153% increase • 90 years and older 316% increase ese numbers are even more dramatic for Southwest Florida, which means the value of the Step Smart collier initiative will increase just as dramatically. the most important step anyone can take to prevent falls is to simply stay active, become more active, or return to an active lifestyle. A CHIEVING S TEP S MART C OLLIER ’ S V ISION & M ISSION : B UILDING B LOCKS OF F ITNESS it is easy to get out of sync with our health and wellness goals and habits. remember that mixing different types of exercise and activity helps both to keep your workouts interesting and to improve your overall health. e key is to find activities that you enjoy. here is an overview of four of the building blocks of fitness and how they can help your body and help prevent falls. e 1st building block of fitness: Cardio endurance exercise • What is it: uses large muscle groups in rhythmic motions over a period of time. cardio workouts get your heart pumping. cardio includes walking, stair climbing, swimming, hiking, cycling, rowing, tennis, and dancing. doing just 15 to 20 minutes of heart-healthy cardio each day will help give you the stamina you need. • Why it’s good for you: helps lessen fatigue and shortness of breath.
