image. When that dries, i scrape paint on and off, creating movement and mystery. up until the scraping process, this is all detail-oriented realism and very fussy. But once i start the scraping and layering, it becomes abstract Ex- pressionism. i’m scraping paint on, sanding it off. going back and forth, dancing around the canvas. i’m creating the feeling of movement. i’m also trying to find a balance between realism and abstraction. “i end up with six to ten layers of clear medium and paint. it’s like encaustic, where you see the layering. e layers provide depth, and you peer through the layers to discover things. i use a putty knife or even plastic credit cards to scrape and texture the paint.
