e following year, Stirling Moss and Bill lloyd drove to a stunning upset victory in an oSca Mt4 owned by cunningham, humbling the lancia factory team that including legends such as juan Manuel Fangio and alberto ascari. in 1955, cunningham produced his third straight win as a car owner when his d-type jaguar driven by Walters and Mike hawthorn won by just 25 seconds over carroll Shelby and Phil hill in a Ferrari. By 1956, Sebring had become second only to the indianapolis 500 in importance in the uSa. at year, the Ferrari factory team made its first appearance at Sebring, capturing a convincing victory with Fangio and Eugenio castellotti driving. Fangio won again the following year, co-driving with jean Behra in a Maserati 450S. Ferrari would dominate six of the next seven races, with legends such as Phil hill and olivier gendebien earning multiple wins. Sebring would even host the first F1 World championship race in the uSa in 1959. But with the Shelby cobra, Ford gt and chevrolet chaparral competing in the 1960s, Sebring’s 12-hour race reached a new level of excitement. When jim hall’s chaparral survived a torrential rainstorm to win the 1965 Sebring endurance race, the uSa had its first winning car since the cunningham in 1953. Sebring 1966 featured a dramatic ending very similar to the 2016 le Mans race. dan gurney was dominating the race in his Ford gt, but on the final lap with only minutes remaining, he lost power at the final turn. he attempted to push the car across the finish line (and was later disqualified for doing so). e team car driven by lloyd ruby and ken Miles passed gurney and took the checkered flag. Sebring’s 12-hour continued to grow every year in popularity and international prestige, but no race could match the drama of 1970. e first half of the race was unremarkable, as Mario and andretti and arturo Merzario built an astonishing mile lead in their Ferrari 512S. When they retired with transmission problems, the excitement began. Several cars took the lead, only to encounter mechanical problems.
