Gus does both paintings and sculpture. e two mediums aid in resolution of ideas and composition, a back and forth process. e sculptures are usually wood assemblages with painted and collaged surfaces. Subject matter for the work includes buildings, figures, animals, buildings and walls. Janvier (January in French) is an old family name. I'm primarily a morning painter while I put on a Beethoven string quartet or Bach partita and drink some coffee. I paint a variety of large still life subjects such as vases, paint tubes, books, boxes, and stacks of clippings. I try for expressive brushstrokes to animate each object. My last group of paintings are of people. Often I'll add extra touches to “finished” paintings upon second and third glance. PORTFOLIO MAGAZINE 67
