At the time Wawashkamo was de- signed, one major innovation by club- makers like Alex Smith was the multiplication of golf irons and the be- ginnings of standardization. e old “niblicks”, “mashies” and “mid-irons” were being redefined into numbered irons contained in a cylindrical golf bag that could be carried by a caddie. Club selection thus became a key part of the game. As Wawashkamo celebrated its first centennial in 1998, it remained faithful to the design heritage staked out by Alex Smith in 1898. e Jewel is an eighteen-hole golf re- source on the island open to the public. e Grand nine, located across from the Grand Hotel, with views of the Straits of Mackinac, was built in 1901 and re- designed in 1987 by golf course architect Jerry Matthews. In 1994, he also designed the Woods nine located in the interior of Mackinac Island. Together they comprise e Jewel, the resort’s 18-hole golf course, separated by a mile and a half and the only course with horse-drawn carriage rides between nines in the country.
