One of the more popular annual events on the island is e Mackinac Is- land Lilac Festival, a 10-day celebration, held in mid-June. It’s the first and largest summer event on the Island, attracting thousands of visitors. Festivities include the coronation of the Lilac Festival Queen and Court, Lilac Festival 10K, horse drawn carriage tours, numerous concerts, wine tastings, A Taste of Mack- inac Culinary Event, Mackinac Island Dog and Pony Show, the Lilac Festival Grand Parade and much more. Mackinac Island offers one of the truly unique experiences in American golf. One of Michigan’s oldest active courses, Wawashkamo, originally created by Alex Smith, celebrated its Centennial in 1998. On that occasion, Wawashkamo could claim the distinction of being one of very few American courses laid out in a links style that remains substantially unaltered. e course was named one of America’s Historic Golf Landmarks by Golf Digest in 1996. e links-style layout utilized natural hazards as opposed to artificial ones. e fairways were designed to magnify the ef- fects of slicing the ball. Bunkers were few but strategically placed. As with the St. Andrews links, the fairways were defined not by trees but by mowed grassy areas. e goal of this design, at a time when the gutta-percha golf ball was played more on the ground than a modern ball is, was to deceive the golfer into thinking that it could be effortlessly rolled right up to the green.
