And also its fragility.” Laurél is heartbroken by the plastic she regularly finds on the shore, and hopes her paintings remind people of the words of marine biologist Dr. Sylvia Earl: “Every drop of water you drink, every breath you take, you’re connected to the sea.” After six years in Grand Cayman, Laurél went stateside in 2017 and now has a studio in the Naples Art District. She says the ocean is a completely different color on the gulf side of Florida. “It’s a whole new palette to paint from.” But you can’t take the island out of the artist. And she remains inspired by the sea and sky of the Caribbean. “I’m actually still there,” Laurél says wistfully. “Once you live by the ocean, you never really leave it behind.
