In 1939, with the introduction of Superman in Action Comics #1, the
world changed. While “superheroes” had existed before this, the creation of
Siegel and Shuster really put the idea of super powered individuals into the
world consciousness. From the beginning, too, there was something global
about the comics these characters inhabited. Superman was from a different
planet and Captain America, who debuted less than a year later, was shown
distinctly “American.” Cap had it in hi ́
