When the section on “English Murders” is served to the reader halfway
through the book, it is like a jolt to the senses. The example of domesticity,
the huge obstacles to divorce in England, and the fact that guns are not too
readily available, Hitchcock noted, often called for more drastic measures that
Jan Olsson further mentions that the puritan foundations of America are held
so closely beneath the cultural surface that cardinal sins, such as gluttony
macabre on this side of the pond.
Even with the bulk of Hitchcock material out there, this fresh perspective gives
Hitchcock fans something new to sink their teeth into. Overall, the book is a
