Anna Bates is an assistant professor of history at Empire State College. Her
published works include a book about purity crusader Anthony Comstock and
an article about the character Calamity Jane in American films. Her teaching
interests include American history, women’s history, and cultural studies. She
owes her interest in historical film interpretation to George Lipsitz, whom she
studied under as an undergraduate at the University of Houston Clear Lake in
the early 1980s.
