Janies David Ballard is an assistant professor of sociology at California State
University, Northridge. Typically his work involves an analysis of how the
media influences public policy. His involvement with the “Homies” characters
began after reading newspaper stories about them and buying the figurines in a
local food outlet.
Ron Briley is assistant headmaster at Sandia Preparatory School in
Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he has taught history for the last twentyseven years. His articles on film have appeared in Film & History, History
Teacher, Literature/Film Quarterly, Social Education, AHA Perspectives, OAH
