It’s an annual publication summarizing the outstanding work your municipal government has completed this past year and the financial tools it took to accomplish that work. On behalf of my talented colleagues on the Arlington City Council, I invite you to explore these pages to better understand how your tax dollars and other City revenues have been used to make Arlington a better place to live, learn, work and play. We continue to create jobs, improve our streets, strengthen our commitment to public safety and enhance the entertainment options for our residents. Fiscal year 2018 was a momentous one, and this annual report shows the many ways we are meeting the Council priority to Invest in Our Economy. The City celebrated the opening of Texas Live! in Arlington’s world-class Entertainment District, which is set to increase our annual visitor total from 14 million to 17 million visitors. The strength of our economic momentum is also evident in the growth of small businesses across our great city, particularly in Downtown and the Southwest Industrial District. In addition, existing businesses like General Motors are embracing innovation with the $250-million Arlington Automotive Logistics Center, set to open in 2019. These game-changing projects will have a significant impact on our local economy. The year also provided multiple opportunities to Enhance Regional Mobility and Put Technology to Work, two key Council priorities. Arlington has developed a reputation around the country as one of the most innovative cities exploring technology-based mobility solutions. Arlington was the first city in the U.S. to offer a continuous autonomous shuttle service to the public with the Milo pilot program, and we are now the first Texas city to offer an on-street, self-driving shuttle service to the public with drive.ai. Via, the City’s on-demand rideshare service, provided more than 130,000 rides between December 2017 and March 2019. We also advanced our efforts to Champion Great Neighborhoods. The Community Relations Commission continues to implement the kindness initiative I launched back in 2017 by recognizing K-12 students with special pep rallies showcasing their incredible acts of kindness. Arlington’s Police and Fire departments are both nationally accredited and lead the nation in innovative, problem-solving programs to benefit the community. Our Parks and Recreation Department has been named the winner of this year’s National Gold Medal Award, the highest honor in the country for parks. We’re making investments to Support Quality Education across the board as your Mayor and City Council. This includes the opening of the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library in June 2018. The state-of-the-art building has received rave reviews from the community, housing 200,000 print and audiovisual resources, as well as dedicated space for children, teens and adults. But don’t just take my word for it, there’s a lot more to check out in the pages to come. Because in Arlington, we can, we do. I invite you to learn for yourself why we’re always dreaming big in The American Dream City! Achievements 18 Sincerely, PAGE 2 Financial Highlights 20 Looking Forward 23 W.
