Achievements
In 2018, the Greater Dallas Planning Council recognized the City of
Arlington’s new City Center, along with the adjacent Urban Union and 101
Center development, with its Built Project Urban Design Award.
The group highlights people and projects whose excellence and
leadership have impacted urban design and planning in the Dallas region.
Arlington was highlighted for its multi-block, urban mixed-use project that
includes the new Council Chamber, George W. Hawkes Downtown Library
and the City Plaza public gathering space; the new residential lofts, small
offices, restaurant and retail space, and shared garage parking at 101 Center;
and the new restaurant and retail space at Urban Union on Front Street.
The Arlington Fire Department received the Route Fifty 2018 Navigator
Award for the Community Paramedic Program. The Navigator Award honors
innovative individuals and teams who have taken a great idea and successfully
implemented it to improve the communities they serve. The Community Paramedic
Program is a collaboration with Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital, and it
aims to help cardiac and stroke patients recuperate successfully in their homes.
Arlington’s Water Utilities department was a finalist for a Navigator Award for its
multi-sensor robot that inspects sanitary sewer mains.
The Texas Recreation & Park Society’s North
Region Conference honored the Arlington Parks
and Recreation Department with three awards
in 2018. The department took top honors in Arts
& Humanities Programing, Communications/
Marketing, and Excellence in Senior Programming.

The City’s Office of Communication was recognized statewide and nationally
for its work with 26 awards from the Texas Association of Municipal Information
Officers (TAMIO) and 3CMA,
the national organization of
public information officers.
Among them were Awards
of Excellence for video
production, publications,
media relations, website
and social media. First-
place awards were given
for the Home Plate Update
newsletter, the City’s
Communication Strategic Plan Update, graphic design, social media and video
programming.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott
honored two Arlington Police
officers with the prestigious
Star of Texas Award. The award
honors peace officers, firefighters
and emergency medical first
responders who are seriously
injured or killed in the line of duty.
Cpl. William Brewer and Officer
Carla Strauser received the award
at a ceremony at the Texas House
of Representatives Chamber in
September.
Five other officers were
recognized at the State Capitol in
2018 by the Texas Commission on
Law Enforcement:
Award for Public Safety: Deputy
Chief Tarrick McGuire. Award
for Professional Achievement:
Lt. Kyle Dishko. Award for Valor:
Sgt. Richard Grimmett and
officers Cody Adams and Charles
Crawford.
