Popular Annual Champion Great Neighborhoods T he “Champion Great Neighborhoods” City Council priority represents the importance of investing in the quality of life of our residents. Through our award-winning parks system, the City’s Neighborhood Matching Grant program, and major investments in public safety, the City is constantly working to ensure our residents receive the best value for their taxpayer dollars and that our neighborhoods are safe, beautiful and vibrant. Arlington Wins 2018 National Gold Medal Award in Parks and Recreation After three years of being a finalist, Arlington Parks and Recreation won the prestigious 2018 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. The award from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and the National Recreation and Park Association honors communities in the U.S. that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, Arlington Ranked No. 2 in National Night Out Participation The National Association of Town Watch ranked Arlington in the No. 2 spot for cities with populations greater than 300,000 for the community’s outstanding participation in National Night Out 2017. More than 220 neighborhoods across The American Dream City participated National Night Out, an annual event in early October that promotes police-community partnerships to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live in. Arlington continued promoting strong neighborhood participation throughout the year in hopes of achieving the No. 1 ranking for National Night Out 2018. Other Park Improvements • More than $930,000 in improvements, including a playground, group picnic pavilion with grill, and an open play space were completed at Eden Park Road in southeast Arlington. • The City began construction on the Harris Road Park in south Arlington in late 2017. PAGE 14 • Arlington also started work on Deaver Park renovations. • Nathan Lowe Park in south Arlington opened. • The City completed a half-mile extension of the trail through River Legacy Parks in north Arlington. The $1.3-million project extended the trail to 7.5 miles, creating an inviting amenity for long-distance runners, cyclists and others who enjoy the outdoors. environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition.
