Community Awards the United States Tennis Association’s Texas Section Family of the Year. Arlington’s efforts have been recognized during this awardwinning year. Recognitions include the following: City of Arlington is one of America’s 100 Best Communities for Young People. The award is presented by America’s Promise Alliance, the largest national alliance dedicated to youth. The award honors communities for commitment to providing healthy, safe and caring environments for young people. More than 300 communities from all over the U.S. take part in the annual competition. Community Development and Planning Department earned an Award of Excellence from the Building Officials Association of Texas. The award recognizes Texas cities for professional and outstanding contributions to the building industry through customer service and performance excellence. The Arlington Tennis Center was presented the 2008 Outstanding Facility of the Year Award by the United States Tennis Association. The Tennis Center was judged on the quality of its programs, staffing, special events, facility appearance, amenities and adherence to USTA standards. The Viridian Project captured the 2007 Best Announced Deal Award, and the developers of three Arlington real estate projects were named finalists in the 16th Annual Best Real Estate Deals of The Year Awards sponsored by the Dallas Business Journal. The award recognized the best in commercial and real estate deals in North Texas and are examples of ongoing efforts to grow and diversify the local economy. Building Official Ed Dryden was named Building Official of the Year by the UT-Arlington Construction Research Center. The award honors outstanding managers in charge of construction code enforcement. Arlington Public Library received the Margaret Irby Nichols Award from North Texas Regional Library System. The honor is in recognition of the library’s collaboration with the Arlington Independent School District to create a community library program. The Office of Communication earned a national PR award from the National Press Club for its Clean Air Campaign and the impact it had on the environment and the Arlington community. The Office of Communication is a winner in the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers Annual Awards Competition. The city’s communication project “Eight City Issues 2 Watch in 2008” was a special citizen’s publication distributed via newspaper advertising and web site. Tennis Center Manager Sheryl Osborn was named the United States Professional Tennis Association’s Texas Division Facility Manager of the Year.
