Ponte Vedra’s Perry Orth competed for the starting QB job at South
Carolina as a scholarship player.
Originally a walk-on at the Columbia campus, working at Publix
to help pay his way through college,
Orth was placed on scholarship during a recent team meeting. Orth’s
work in the summer weight program
was part of the reason he earned
that scholarship, according to head
coach Steve Spurrier.
“I still have some more work to do
if I want to see the field, but I think
Coach Spurrier realized how hard I
have been working and he rewarded
me for that,” Orth said in recent
interview.
On Tuesday Spurrier has named
redshirt sophomore Connor Mitch
as the starting quarterback for the
season opener on Thursday, Sep-
tember 3, against North Carolina in
Charlotte.
The Gamecocks held its second
scrimmage of the preseason camp
Saturday morning. Statistically, little
separated the trio of Mitch, Orth and
redshirt freshman Michael Scarnecchia.
Mitch, who was the first quarterback to take a snap, completed
5-of-10 passes for 71 yards, but was
picked off twice.
Orth also went 5-for-10 for 56
yards, while Scarnecchia completed
six of his 10 attempts for 58 yards.
True freshman Lorenzo Nunez connected on all three of his pass attempts for 44 yards.
“The quarterbacks did a lot of
good things,” Spurrier said. “I wish
one of them outplayed all the rest,
but when you look at the stats,
they’re probably pretty similar.”
Orth saw action last season in
one game. He went 0-for-2 passing
against Furman in his second career
game.
His first was brief action in 2013
late in the game against Coastal
Carolina, completing his only pass
attempt for five yards.
Orth graduated from Ponte Vedra
High in 2012 where he was coached
by Mike Loyd. South Carolina’s season-opener is against North Carolina
on Sept. 3.
