REVOLUTIONARY BASIN- AND
SINK TRAPS FLYWHEEL PUMP PREVENTS DAMAGE
TO INFRASTRUCTURE
Wirquin Manufacturing would like
to introduce you to Wirquin NEO
and Wirquin NEO Air, the next
generation of basin- and sink traps.
These products include a number of
innovations, including over-moulded
washers and bi-injection technology,
promising no risk of leaks. The
quarter-turn removable cup means
dismantling for cleaning is both
quick and easy. The real advantage
though comes from the revolutionary
air system function. Local pump manufacturer KSB Pumps
and Valves showed off its world-class
engineering ability recently when it was
called upon to develop a unique flywheel
water pump system able to continue
pumping long enough to mitigate the
possible effects of water hammer in the
event of power failures.
This innovative option replaces the
traditional Ventapipe air admittance
valve and prevents noise (gurgling)
and bad smells, with no additional
parts or connections required. It works
by allowing the pipes to be naturally
ventilated. When negative pressure
is created in the pipes, Wirquin NEO
Air’s membrane rises and thus creates
continual ventilation to prevent suction
of the water out of the trap, thereby
preventing bad odours from finding
their way into the home.
The universal inlet comes in diameters
32mm or 40mm, and the 40mm outlet
is supplied with a 40–50mm adaptor.
The system is height adjustable,
available in 50mm and 80mm water
seal options in both NEO and NEO Air,
and complies with EN274.

Weighing in at 681kg each, the flywheels
spin up to 3 000rpm and provide enough
momentum to pump water for at least four
minutes after power is interrupted. The design
is based on their Multitec multistage pumps
that are configured in an inline orientation,
with the suction side on the left front side of
the pump and discharge on the right front
side to make room for the flywheels.
The system also makes use of a variable
speed drive to synchronise the motor, pump,
and flywheel speeds and makes use of
specialised couplings to ensure that the
transfer of energy between the motor and
the flywheel remains seamless at all times,
including start-up, power outages, and
restart while the flywheels are still turning.
The system uses a heavy-duty base plate made
from channel-type steel and reinforced around
the flywheel plumber block pedestal similar to
large industrial base plates and it ensures that
the system remains perfectly balanced at all
times.

IMPROVED PUMP SUCTION
KSB Group has developed a special
impeller to further improve the suction
characteristics of its Movitec multistage
high-pressure pumps. The new impeller
is particularly useful in applications
with critical inlet conditions, as well
as applications in which the pump is
required to take in water from low-lying
tanks or at higher temperatures.
These conditions are not always suitable
for standard pumps, as pressure drop
in the intake area can cause cavitation
in the first pump stage, resulting in
excessive wear of pump parts or motor
bearings as well as a reduced service
life of the pump due to damaged parts
and an unbalanced hydraulic system.
The new impeller features a modified inlet
diameter, vanes that allow a slightly diagonal
throughflow, and a newly designed stage
casing, all of which serve to substantially
improve the pump’s NPSH curve.
The multistage centrifugal pumps from
KSB’s Movitec range are designed
for handling fluids such as water,
coolants, condensate, and mineral
oils. They are ideal for a wide variety
of applications ranging from industrial
boiler feed installations in steam circuits,
recirculation and firefighting systems,
cooling water circuits and washing
plants, to pressure boosting in general
process applications.
