Figure 3.
What pipe size would you select? A 35mm
pipe will suffice in terms of the requirements of
SANS 10252:1; that is, 2.5 metres per second;
however, the piping transverses across a
boardroom where noise is a factor, so personally I
would go for the 42mm option at around 1.8m/s.
It will cost the client a little more money, but they
will love you for it in the long run!
PRACTICAL APPLICATION AND BENEFITS
An understanding of the above principles will
allow you to:
• Offer your client a better service and final
product.
• Set yourself aside as a knowledgeable and
professional service provider, thus enabling
you to command better prices for your work
based on your professional advice and
guidance to your client.
• Avoid you having to go back to try and fix
problems and attend to complaints that are not
easy to fix after the completion of an installation,
which will end up costing you money.
• Assist you in costing of tenders and quoting.

Ensure compliance with recommended-
practice acceptable norms.
Help to guard you against unscrupulous
salespeople trying to convince you to use
products that they claim will allow you to
reduce pipe sizes and in that way save
material costs on a project.
It is so sad to see how many great projects are
literally ruined by poor plumbing practices and
how many unaware plumbers are lumped with
never-ending headaches and end up losing
money instead of making money.
A typical example of this is where people believe
that by installing a 600kPa geyser and valves,
a house can be piped out using 15mm tubing,
resulting in unacceptably high water velocities
as water races through the small bore piping
— note: there is nothing wrong with 600kPa
systems being installed if the correct approach to
them is made.
