Standards and regulations
South African Bureau of Standards
(SABS) mark-bearing products, or those
covered by current South African National
Standards (SANS) conformity test reports,
are widely specified on both public and
private sector building, construction,
water, and wastewater projects.
The Consumer Protection Act, 2008 (Act No. 68
of 2008) — as amended — stresses the below
points to the purpose of the Act, and the right
to receive goods that comply with applicable
standards, set under the Standards Act:
• Promote and protect the economic
interests of consumers;
• Improve access to, and the quality of
information, so consumers can make
informed choices according to their
individual wishes and needs;
• Protect consumers from hazards to
their well-being and safety;

concerning the social and economic
effects of consumer choices;
Facilitate the freedom of consumers
