Break
Ever dreamed of leaving the rat race behind?
When Hollie Allman’s family had a change
of circumstance they decided to pack their
(minimal) bags and travel the world
W
hen we sold our home and my husband was
made redundant a week later, we decided to
skip the horrors of looking for an affordable
home in Hong Kong in favour of a three-month
trip to South America. We weren’t the first family I’d known to
drop everything and go travelling and we certainly won’t be the
last, so what is it that makes you want to put your life on hold
and more importantly, just how do you do it?
We were lucky to be in a position where we weren’t locked
into paying exorbitant rent while travelling, but timings never
work out perfectly, so thankfully our amazing friends who
were going away over Christmas let us stay at their place in
between moving out of our property and travelling. When it
came to the contents of our home we chose around five key
pieces of furniture that we loved, plus personal effects such
as photos and valued toys, and paid around $10,000 to store
it all in Kowloon Bay for six months. Everything else went to
charity or was sold or given away online (what would we do
without Facebook?), then we were ready to get planning.
