Healing the wounds of Divorce

By BossmomQG

Healing after divorce involves rebuilding your life on your own terms. Just think... you can arrange the house to your liking... dress to your tastes... even cook the foods he detested. It’s exciting choosing your life’s direction and doing the things that you refrained from in order to please him.

Start With A Clean Slate. One of the best things that you can do is to remove his “stuff” from your life. Why not let him have his favorite recliner, especially if it was never to your liking. Give him all his memorabilia from high school, family, sports and hobbies. All these things really hold no meaning to you, and their presence can bring back painful memories. Start your new life with a clean slate.

Evaluate Your Friendships. Part of this process may mean re-inventing your friendships. Some of your married friends may not feel comfortable with you right now. It’s as if your divorce threatens to cause problems in their marriage. They may be jealous of your new found freedom. Try not to take offense. In time, they may come around to accepting the person you are now. Meanwhile, stick with the friends who willingly support you and are there for you when you need to rant, rave, and cry. Having a shoulder to lean on can save your sanity at times.

Joining a support group will give you the chance to talk to other people healing from the wounds of divorce. Having a support system can help you cope with the inevitable stress you will face. You can check the paper or your church for any divorce recovery programs being sponsored. The United Way is also a good source or information on support groups, and can also help you locate a shelter if you need one. Click here to look up your local United Way. You can also check out Parents without Partners and Divorce Care for local chapters.
