The U.S. Census Bureau (Bureau) currently provides seven options for individuals to
identify their race for the decennial Census and the American Community Survey:
White alone
Black or African American alone
American Indian and Alaska Native alone
Asian alone
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone
Some other race alone
Two or more races
These categories are separate from the ethnic category. The bureau allows individuals
to identify their ethnicity as either “Hispanic” or “Not Hispanic.” Individuals who identify
themselves as Hispanic must also identify a race. In the remainder of this document, we
have combined the “American Indian and Alaska Native alone” category with “Native
Hawaiian and Other Pacific Island alone” category, as they represent less than 0.2
percent of the population in the County.
Maps showing the concentrations of the various racial and ethnic groups are presented
on the following pages.
