BACK IN THE GAME By Garry Morehouse, a founding director of the Midland Area Pickleball Club Pickleball allows players to stay active in the face of health issues. I was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis (MG), a rare disease that causes fluctuating weakness of the voluntary muscles, such as drooping eyelid, double vision, slurred speech, difficulty chewing and swallowing, weakness in the arms and legs, and difficulty breathing. MG can strike anyone at any age. Its cause is unknown, and there’s no cure. However, it’s treatable with medication and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) infusions. IVIG is a concentration of human antibodies, pooled from thousands of donors, that bind to bad antibodies blocking the junction between nerve and muscle—and take them out of action. In addition to medication, your attitude, exercise and support system are important parts of your overall wellness. Pickleball players have been a tremendous, positive support group—I got my life back and am back in the game playing pickleball. Hopefully, my army of IVIG-infused good antibodies continues to bode well against my MG. I have full muscle strength back, and my stamina has improved.
