FROM THE USAPA 2016 USAPA BOARD OF DIRECTORS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR On February 24, I had the honor of being a guest speaker at the 89th Annual Club Managers Association of America’s (CMAA) World Conference in San Diego, California. The event attracted over 3,000 people from all over the United States and abroad. Attendees included general managers, club managers, controllers, grounds professionals, golf professionals and various board members. In addition to giving the live presentation, the PowerPoint slides were made available to all conference attendees via the event web application. JUSTIN MALOOF While attending the conference, it was clearly evident that pickleball continues to be a hot topic and it was a pleasure hearing from individuals from all over the U.S. who shared what the addition of pickleball has meant to their club or facility. Many shared their experiences of rapid participant growth and the need for additional courts. Others simply wanted information on how to start a program. Pickleball is truly gaining momentum. While we hear every day how the sport is providing individuals with social and health benefits, it’s always great hearing how the game is also making an economic impact in all parts of the country. The CMAA is a tremendous organization. USAPA ambassadors looking for new pickleball opportunities in their area should reach out to clubs and see if there’s mutual interest in exploring a pickleball endeavor at the facility. Together, the USAPA and CMAA have the ability to further broaden the exposure of this great sport and introduce thousands more to the game we love. MARCH 2016 | MAGAZINE 7
