James Madison’s Montpelier
PHOTO: larry bouterie
The birthplace of the U. S. Constitution, cradle of history, the legacy of an enslaved
community, noteworthy architecture and decorative arts, the Landmark Forest,
plantation life and landscape…all will be showcased and enhanced by your creativity
and imagination. These are the ingredients for a unique and exclusive photographic
expedition on the grounds of JAMES MADISON’S MONTPELIER.
Led by award-winning National Geographic
photographer Kenneth Garrett, you will
learn about this historic site and will have
unprecedented access to capture history
through your photographic lens. Over a long
weekend, you will walk in the footsteps of
President James Madison, his family, and
the enslaved community, and discover how
historic events have made the property what
it is today.
Ken Garrett will share personal and
professional guidance, enabling you to make the most of your visit. You can choose an
assignment or use your own voice to tell the
story of Montpelier through photography.
Regardless of your personal focus, you will
have before or after-hours access to the
President’s Madison’s House; and 24-hour
access to the grounds. Ken will be on site to
both coach and critique your photography.
Montpelier Foundation team members
responsible for maintaining and interpreting
President Madison’s legacy will share
their knowledge of Madison’s history, the
U.S. Constitution, architecture, fine and
