Two Filipino-Canadian singers compete in
Voices of Passion finals
Two talented Filipino Cana-
dians have made the cut to the
grand finals of the Voices of Pas-
sion singing competition.
Ysabel Rimando will compete
in the adult division, as Rachel Ca-
rino will be in the kids’ category.
Rimando is 24 years old, and
from La Union. She started sing-
ing at age nine, and she came
to Canada in May 2015. She is a
daughter of Isabelo and Berna-
dette Rimando. Ysabel is current-
ly working as Massage Therapist
at Chillax Massage & Wellness
in Vancouver, owned by Audrey
Lim.
Carino is 14 years old. She is
the daughter of Raffy and Gem-
ma Carino from Vancouver. The
youngest child in the family, she
started singing at nine years old
under the KMZ production of Kikz
De Leon.
The two singers will be com-
peting against many other final-
ists from other communities, in-
cluding mostly Chinese talents.
Voices of Passion is organized
by the Community Mental Well-
ness Association of Canada.
The event will be held on Sep-
tember 28 from 7 p.m. to 9:30
p.m. at the Michael J. Fox Theatre
at 7373 MacPherson in Burnaby.
The grand prize is a music
video production worth $5,000. ●

Brillante Mendoza’s
Alpha,The Right to Kill
to compete in int’l film fest
Acclaimed filmmak-
er Brillante Mendoza’s
latest movie “Alpha, The
Right to Kill” will com-
pete for the top prize in
an international film fes-
tival in Spain.
The film is an entry
to the main competition
of the San Sebastian In-
ternational Film Festival,
a first for Mendoza.
The festival will be-
gin on Sept. 21 and end
on Sept. 29.
“Alpha, The Right to
Kill” will compete against
Felix Van Groeningen’s
Brad
Pitt-produced
“Beautiful Boy,” Louis
Garrel’s “A Faithful Man”
and Peter Strickland’s
“In Fabric.”

Mendoza,”Alpha,
The Right to Kill” is set
against the backdrop of
the Philippine government’s
war on drugs.
Espiritu was also the writ-
er of Mendoza’s Netflix series
“Amo” and his 2016 Cannes
Film Festival entry “Ma’ Rosa.”
In 2009, Mendoza was
hailed Best Director in the
prestigious festival for his film
“Kinatay” and has since gone
to produce an extensive body of

Bela Padilla, JC Santos to
star in teleserye
Bela Padilla and JC Santos
are bringing their popular movie
tandem to television, with the an-
nouncement of a teleserye to be
produced by ABS-CBN’s Dream-
scape Entertainment Television.
On Instagram, the TV pro-
duction unit announced the cast
of the teleserye, with the working
title “Mea Culpa,” including Tony
Labrusca, Janice de Belen, Kit
Thompson, Ivana Alawi, Sandino
Martin, Ketchup Eusebio, and
Ayen Laurel.
The series will be directed by
Andoy Ranay (“The Good Son,”
“Till I Met You”) and Dan Ville-
gas (“Exes Baggage,” “Changing
Partners”).
“Mea Culpa” marks the third
major team-up of Padilla and San-
tos, who were also paired in the
romance-drama films “100 Tula
Para Kay Stella” and “The Day Af-
ter Valentines.”
“Mea Culpa” is the latest
Dreamscape series in produc-
tion, adding to the likes of “The
General’s Daughter,” “Kadenang
Ginto,” “Starla,” and “Honey My
Love So Sweet.” ●
