Contract awarded for Bear Creek Bridge replacement project

Surrey , BC – The contract to replace the existing Bear Creek Bridge awarded by Surrey City Council is a significant step forward in the Surrey LRT Project .
WestPro was awarded the $ 5 Million contract at last night ’ s Regular Council meeting to construct the Bear Creek Bridge replacement , one of the Early Works projects identified to set the stage for light rail transit south of the Fraser River .
“ Getting started on this enhancement project is an important milestone to showcase that our preparatory work is well underway and that we are shovel ready for LRT construction in Surrey ,” said Mayor Linda Hepner . “ In a show of support for LRT , the Federal Government committed to the funding for this project over a year ago , and we are thrilled to see it move forward .”
“ This is an important next step in preparing roads and infrastructure for the Surrey-Newton-Guildford Line ,” says Kevin Desmond , CEO , TransLink . “ We are pleased to see that the City is moving forward to get ready for the anticipated LRT once funding is secured for the project .”
Surrey ’ s existing Bear Creek Bridge is situated south of 88th Avenue on King George
Blvd . The timber trestle bridge , constructed in the 1930 ’ s , is currently too narrow to accommodate the proposed Surrey LRT corridor , running on King George Blvd . from Newton Town Centre to Surrey City Centre , before it turns onto 104 Avenue towards Guildford Town Centre .
“ The replacement of this critical infrastructure , which many people may not even know exists , will reap benefits to the LRT project and beyond ,” said Councillor Tom Gill , Chair of the Transportation Infrastructure Committee .
Replacement of the existing bridge will include rehabilitating the creek channel by improving the stream substrate and incorporating in-stream aquatic habitat features . The design will also better accommodate wildlife movement by offering a wider , unobstructed passage underneath King George Boulevard which further supports the City ’ s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Green Infrastructure Network .
Construction is expected to begin in mid-January and last approximately 10 months . The City of Surrey will keep traffic lanes open in either direction throughout that time , maintaining access to businesses and residences along the route . ●

Seasonal Facebook gift exchanges aren ’ t what they seem

Vancouver , BC - In 2016 BBB saw an increase in people getting involved in Facebook gift exchanges that made big promises but failed to deliver . In particular was the Facebook Wine Exchange . You know the drill ... send someone one bottle of wine and miraculously you ’ ll receive 36 bottles in return ! If it were only that easy .
Gift exchanges on Facebook have been hanging around in various forms since 2015 and they all have the same pyramid feel ... that ’ s because they are simple pyramid schemes . Sending one bottle of wine seems harmless enough , however , operating and taking part in a pyramid scheme is illegal in Canada and while you might not get arrested for sending a bottle of wine , you could face penalties or fines .
“ Fortunately , we haven ’ t seen the wine version of the Facebook Gift Exchange show its head much this holiday season ,” says Evan Kelly , Senior Communications Advisor for BBB serving Mainland BC . “ But that doesn ’ t mean it ’ s not out there or offering some other exchange where users are lead to believe you can get multiples in return for one input . Like any pyramid scheme , the person who starts it gets all the booty and the rest lose out .”
Whether you are giving wine or cash , pyramid schemes have one common factor ; they are driven by recruitment . Which means in order to get those 36 bottles of wine you need to bring in that many people .
BBB offers these tips to avoid a pyramid scheme :
* Be wary of “ opportunities ” to invest in things where the success or failure relies on subsequent recruitment .
* Independently verify the legitimacy of any franchise or investment before you invest . * If it seems too good to be true , it is .
* Be wary of promises of low risk and high returns in a short amount of time .
* If no product or service is being offered or sold , how does it make money ?
* Invest your money with reputable investment professionals and firms with a track record .
* Be very wary of investments that promise low risk and high returns . ●
