Allowing Your Actions to Influence Others
Jayne’s
World
By Jayne Anastacio
“Example is not the
main thing in influencing
others, it is the only thing.”
– Albert Scheitzer, Nobel
Peace Prize recipient for
his philosophy of “The
Reverence for Life”.
From a very young age, the
first people who influence us are the
ones who became our guardians
from the beginning. We watch
what they do, and we learn from
their actions. My parents were my
main influence in my life, as well as
my siblings. I was also fortunate
enough to have been partially
raised by my great grandmother,
and both sets of maternal and
paternal grandparents. Your family
is the basic foundation of how your
personality begins to take shape,
and from where your character
is built. I feel very blessed that
despite my family’s quirks, and
imperfections, I grew up with a
solid foundation. I felt a lot of love
from my parents. I have observed
both of them throughout my life,
and I saw how hard they worked to
provide for their family. My father’s
incredible talent for creating fine
art, and his entrepreneurial skills
allowed his 5 kids and my mother
to move to Canada. My mother
went back to school so she can
qualify to work as a nurse’s aide,
and soon enough she was working
at a hospital in Richmond, then in
Vancouver not long after. Their
actions taught me to follow my
passion, and so here I am still
doing so. I am so grateful that
my parents taught us the basic
principles of life. Most importantly,
they showed us how important it
is know how to speak with, and
become connected with God.
On my last article here, I
wrote about leaving our world
better than when we found it. I
have learned in these latter years
the wisdom of leading by example
instead of telling people what to
do. Most people, young and old
do not like being told what to do,
and it could get frustrating trying
to do so when it just falls on “deaf
ears” or the ego. Truth lies in
our action. Truth is in doing the
right thing even when no one is
looking. My husband is currently
my greatest influence. Through
his examples, I have learned about
doing the right thing even though
it could be the hardest choice to
make. For those of you who have
children, this principle is important
to know. Our children really watch
what we do. If you desire to raise

wise children, learn to be wise, and
be wise. If you want the
