August 1 - 15, 2016 PHILIPPINE ASIAN NEWS TODAY B7 Allowing Your Actions to Influence Others Jayne’s World By Jayne Anastacio “Example is not the main thing in influencing others, it is the only thing.” – Albert Scheitzer, Nobel Peace Prize recipient for his philosophy of “The Reverence for Life”. From a very young age, the first people who influence us are the ones who became our guardians from the beginning. We watch what they do, and we learn from their actions. My parents were my main influence in my life, as well as my siblings. I was also fortunate enough to have been partially raised by my great grandmother, and both sets of maternal and paternal grandparents. Your family is the basic foundation of how your personality begins to take shape, and from where your character is built. I feel very blessed that despite my family’s quirks, and imperfections, I grew up with a solid foundation. I felt a lot of love from my parents. I have observed both of them throughout my life, and I saw how hard they worked to provide for their family. My father’s incredible talent for creating fine art, and his entrepreneurial skills allowed his 5 kids and my mother to move to Canada. My mother went back to school so she can qualify to work as a nurse’s aide, and soon enough she was working at a hospital in Richmond, then in Vancouver not long after. Their actions taught me to follow my passion, and so here I am still doing so. I am so grateful that my parents taught us the basic principles of life. Most importantly, they showed us how important it is know how to speak with, and become connected with God. On my last article here, I wrote about leaving our world better than when we found it. I have learned in these latter years the wisdom of leading by example instead of telling people what to do. Most people, young and old do not like being told what to do, and it could get frustrating trying to do so when it just falls on “deaf ears” or the ego. Truth lies in our action. Truth is in doing the right thing even when no one is looking. My husband is currently my greatest influence. Through his examples, I have learned about doing the right thing even though it could be the hardest choice to make. For those of you who have children, this principle is important to know.
