From an Olympic gold medalist representing the United States , to six-division world boxing champion and Hall of Famer , Oscar De La Hoya now wants to be the president of his country .
The head of his own promotional firm bearing his nickname “ Golden Boy ,” De La Hoya told a group of media men while promoting the middleweight title rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin on Saturday that he has “ real ” interest in launching a presidential bid for the 2020 election .
“ It ’ s real ,” De La Hoya said as quoted by the Los Angeles Times . “ That ’ s the beauty of our nation . If Arnold [ Schwarzenegger ] can be governor , if [ Donald ] Trump can be president , then why can ’ t a Mexican- American who won an Olympic gold medal , who ’ s over 35 and a U .
