Bishop Pabillo : ‘ I support the workers for wage increase ’

The head of the Catholic Bishops ’ Conference of the Philippines of the Episcopal Commission on the Laity backed the call of workers for wage increase .
Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo cited the rising cost of goods and commodities with the implementation of the Tax Reform Acceleration and Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act ( TRAIN ) as reason .
“ I support the workers asking for wage increase ,” he said in an interview .
“ The TRAIN Law makes life harder for the workers and the ordinary people ,” added Pabillo .
The Manila prelate said the TRAIN Law should be junked and changed for more equitable Tax Law .
In the past , Pabillo lamented how almost everything is increasing except the

pay of the workers .
“ If this government wants inclusive growth , it should increase the pay of the workers ,” he said at that time .
Pabillo added that if the government cannot grant a salary increase , it should provide other benefits to workers such as scrapping the contractualization of workers for them to be secure in their tenure .
Earlier , the Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines ( ALU-TUCP ) called on all regional wage boards to hold emergency meetings and adjust prevailing wage rates citing the increase in the prices of goods and commodities .
ALU-TUCP spokesperson Alan Tanjusay , meantime , renewed their call to President Duterte to approve their proposed P500 cash voucher subsidy for workers as a form of government safety net for workers affected by the eroding buying power of their daily minimum wage .
Along with the proposal , the ALU-TUCP also urged the 17 Regional Tripartite Productivity Board in the country to convene an emergency meeting and synchronized all wage rates to a uniform P800 across-the-board daily minimum wage for all workers nationwide .
“ Let us not wait for the perfect storm to happen . Government must now mitigate the worsening plight of workers and their families by providing safety net while employers , on one hand , must immediately provide a substantial wage increase and save workers from falling into deeper destitution . These government and employers intervention are important measure to raise to P1,200 a day — a decent amount needed by a family to live above poverty threshold ,”

“ The wages should now be uniform rate because the poverty in Luzon is the same poverty felt by workers in Visayas and Mindanao . The prices of commodities are the same in every region so the salary should also be uniform ,” he added .

Korea donates 130 patrol cars to PNP

Philippine National Police ( PNP ) Chief Director General Oscar Albayalde has revised the protocol in the maintenance of police patrol cars after receiving the 130 patrol vehicle donation from the South Korean government .
Albayalde said he revised the protocol of maintaining the PNP ’ s patrol cars as hundreds of the vehicles procured and donated to the police would usually end up as useless in just a few years .
Instead of the usual policy that the police car or motorcycle is named to the unit where they are donated , Albayalde said the current policy is to name them to the policemen that would be designated as the vehicle ’ s official drivers or riders .
“ The vehicles are being issued to the policemen who are duly-authorized by the commander as the drivers of a particular motor vehicle . In this way , we would be able to monitor and identify the persons responsible for even a minor dent ,” said Albayalde .
Unlike before when it is usually difficult to pinpoint who among the policemen are responsible for misuse and accidents , Albayalde said the official drivers have the obligation to ensure that the car is well-maintained .
“ So now there is accountability ,” said Albayalde .
The Chief PNP made the statement after the South Korean government donated on Tuesday 130 patrol vehicles to the PNP – 49 units of Hyundai Elantra and 81 units of Hyundai Starex van .
“ These will be used to boost anti-criminality and criminal investigation efforts of the PNP ,” said Albayalde .
Korean Ambassador H . E Han Dong-Man and Commissioner General of Korea National Police Agency Lee Chul- Sung were present during the turnover .
The Chief PNP said the patrol vehicles will be distributed to the Directorate for Investigation and Detection Management , Criminal Investigation and Detective Group ,
Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board to convene and assess the impact of rising costs of goods on workers ’ s income and purchasing power upon the instruction of President Duterte .
“ We are doing this to provide daily wage earners the capability to cushion the impact of spiraling prices if not totally recover the lost value of their income ,” said Bello . ( L . A . Aquino , mb . com )
Anti-Kidnapping Group , Anti- Cybercrime Group , and National Capital Region Police .
He added that some of the patrol cars will be distributed to the City Police Offices of Angeles , Cebu , Lapu-Lapu , Mandaue , Davao and Baguio to bolster anti-criminality and police visibility efforts where Korean communities are established .
In return , Albayalde said that the Korean government is seeking for the solution of crimes involving its citizens , the recent cases of which were reported in Cebu and Caloocan cities .
“ We assured them that we will do everything to solve these cases and of course , we assured them that we will take care of the equipment that they donated to us ,” said Albayalde . ( A . B . Recuenco , mb . com )

11,000 jobs available in government infrastructure program

At least 11,000 jobs will be available to Filipinos as government agencies begin to implement “ Build Build Build ” projects aimed at reaching the country ’ s “ golden age of infrastructure .”
The agencies launched yesterday the “ Job Portal ” website showing thousands of job vacancies for governmentrelated construction projects .
Public Works Secretary Mark Villar said during yesterday ’ s launch that the job vacancies in the website were sourced from 10 contractors .
Villar is optimistic that more contractors will be posting job vacancies in the website and the number could soar to 100,000 .
“ Maybe in the next month there would already be an increase . This is just the first day so we are still collecting the ( job ) openings in all the regions so we could complete our list ,” Villar said .
While the Job Portal is a component of and can be found in the Build Build Build
website www . build . gov . ph , it will cover all government infrastructure projects and not only the 75 flagship ones .
The jobs posted online are from contractors with projects with the Department of Public Works and Highways , Department of Transportation and Bases Conversion and
Development Authority .
Asked if local contractors could offer a competitive salary to the jobs found abroad , Villar said this will depend on the company “ but they could offer competitive salaries because there is a big demand for engineers .”
