The geometric mean answers the question, “If all the quantities had the same value, what would that value have to be in order to achieve the same product?” The geometric mean is the nth root of the prod- uct of the scores or Geometric Mean = The inflorescence should be gracefully arching with the flowers well spaced and well displayed according to the breeding. Novelty types should also be well displayed according to their breeding. The Phalaenopsis point scale for AOS Awards During AOS judging the individual flower parts are judged sepa- rately using the appropriate scale. Phalaenopsis Scale Flower form General form 15 Sepals 5 Petals 6 Labellum 4 Subtotal 30 Color of flower General color 15 Sepals & Petals 10 Labellum 5 Subtotal 30 Other characteristics Size of flower 10 Substance and Texture 10 Habit and Arrangement of Inflorescence(s) 10 Floriferousness 10 TOTAL 100 The General Scale is used where the flower under consideration does not meet the Phalaenopsis criteria: toward roundness, fullness and flatness. The difference with the General Point Scale is that in- dividual flower segments are not judged separately. At least half of the flowers should be open so that their arrangement and presentation can be properly judged. Here are my observations: 1. Improved cultural conditions mean better flower quality A. Brighter light (more sun) = improved substance B. Even humidity levels = improved form, better shape C. Constant root moisture = improved flower textured D. Adequate feeding = all of the above 2. Cooler growing temperatures (less than 80°F) improve flower quality by producing: The number of flowers and arrangement will vary according to the species, or breeding.
