“We need a vessel. Something to pass down,” I said. Karma was the youngest of us. Only sixteen, she did not quite know how the law of the universe worked yet. Nevertheless, she was very talented for her age. She’d been able to cure an old woman of arthritis at the age of twelve.

“What about your necklace, Willow?” Lana suggested.

I peered down at the pendant resting on my collar. It was a family heirloom passed down from my grandmother to my mother.

My mother gave it to me when I was ten. When I was not yet considered a “wicked, freak of a girl”.

“I suppose that would do,” I said.

I undid the chain with trembling hands. I was never planning on passing it down or having children, but I suppose it simply had to be done.

I handed the necklace to June, our Aries. She pressed the pendant to her lips, and passed it around in a circle. To Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

We all connected our hands, right over left as we’d all been taught when first learning to do rituals. “Universe, we have gathered to pass our blessings on to a future generation. Hear our pleas and grant our wishes.”

My necklace was draped over June’s arms, hanging daintily, swaying in the breeze. I noticed the sky begin to darken.
