COLEMAN CENTER FOR FAMILIES & CHILDREN MISSION: The mission of the Coleman Center for Families & Children is to serve all families and children in the Petal School District in locating, accessing, and navigating available resources spe- cific to each family’s physical, emo- tional, and educational needs in order to ensure the wellbeing of the family and children, resulting in successful school and life experiences. The work at the Center for Families and children is focused upon four cornerstones- building relationships, early learning, family support, and integrated commu- nity services. The Center for Families and Children is a place for all families, with a multi- tude of resources that can help any parent feel better equipped for the daily challenges of family life.The Center of- fers coordinated community resources and services in an accessible and wel- coming “one-stop” family support cen- ter. Resources and services are FREE and are offered to all families in the Petal School District. We are open year- round, so stop by and check us out! This partnership provides additional resources for checkout, support to area childcare providers, and professional development for educators. • Five parent educators serve Petal families with children ages birth-three in our Parents as Teachers program, a nationally recognized home visiting initia- tive. This program has been available for 23 years in our community. For the 2017-2018 school year, our parent educators made over 900 visits with families. • The Backyard Bus added stops to its regular route, including two in-home childcare providers. • Funded through a Petal Education Foundation grant, classes enjoyed learn- ing about the various stages of development resulting in beautiful butterflies. Led by Parents as Teachers Coordinator, Mary Cirino, all four-year-old children who attended preschool in Petal engaged in “growing butterflies”. • Jennifer Sheridan, our Family & Student Engagement specialist, successfully completed training to be certified as a Trust Based Relationship Intervention provider. • NEW for 2018-2019 school year- Young Einsteinsʼ Discovery Lab will provide opportunities for a classroom setting, allowing preschools to engage in technol- ogy, engineering, mathematics, and scientific investigations.
