GIFTED STUDIES PROGRAM he purpose of the Petal School District Gifted Studies Program is to provide intellectually gifted children in grades 2-6, as defined by the Mississippi Depart- ment of Education, with a differentiated cur- riculum designed to meet their unique academic, intellectual, and socio-economic needs. Our mission is to provide educational ex- periences that will enable students to reach their highest potential as future leaders and problem solvers in an ever-changing, global society. The PSD Gifted Studies Program is guided by the program standards, desired learner outcomes, and state mandated regu- lations for all gifted programs in Mississippi as defined by the Mississippi Department of Education. School administrators, teachers, and par- ents work cooperatively to identify and serve intellectually gifted students in grades 2-6. A group gifted screener is administered to all students during first grade. Beginning in second grade, students identified as intellectually gifted are served a minimum of 5 hours per week through a gifted “pull-out” program. The goals and objectives of the Petal HIGHLIGHTS Petal Primary • Held a Veterans Day celebra- tion honoring veterans in the community. • Students and parents attend the Nutcracker Ballet. • Participated in coding through Code.org • Started a Robotics team. The girls team was awarded the high- est award at the league tourna- ment and went on to compete at the state level. T Petal Elementary • 3rd grade-dissected owl pel- lets; 4th grade-dissected frogs • 4th grade participated in PES Tableaux focusing on WWI & WWII and its impact on Missis- sippi. • Participated in coding using Code.org School District Gifted Studies Program are to provide a differentiated curriculum that incorporates students’ interests, strengths, and learning styles; promote self-awareness and self-directed learn- ing; enhance leadership abilities and group dynamics; develop 21st Century Learning Skills (Common Core State Standards) in creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. The PSD Gifted Studies Program is committed to enhancing and enriching the educational experiences of all stu- dents through exposure to and partici- pation in the fine arts, career exploration, community service, tech- nology, and socio-emotional learning. Petal Upper Elementary • 5th and 6th grade Gifted classes visited the Pascagoula River Audubon Center. • Students participated in a Viking unit • Students created Christmas Cards for an art contest for the “The Extra Table.”
