‘ PRIME MINISTER ’ S PROPOSALS FALL SHORT ’ SAYS LEADING VET ASSOCIATION
The Prime Minister ’ s proposals for EU nationals living in the UK have been claimed to fall short of providing certainty by a leading veterinary association .
The British Veterinary Association , which each year sees around 50 percent of vets registering to practise in the UK coming from overseas , mostly the EU , says the Prime Minister ’ s proposals fall short of providing the certainty that EU vets and vet nurses living and working in the UK deserve .
British Veterinary Association president Gudrun Ravetz said : “ Our EU colleagues play a crucial role in helping the UK maintain animal health , animal welfare , and public health for the rest of society too .
“ BVA has called for all EU vets and vet nurses currently working in the UK to be guaranteed living and working rights .
“ At this stage , the Prime Minister ’ s outline proposal leaves too many questions unanswered and we hope the full details , due to be released on Monday , offer something more concrete . The EU referendum has already had a serious effect on EU colleagues , who have been teetering on a knife-edge for 12 months now .”
The outline proposal does not indicate whether individuals with settled status will be permitted to bring in children or spouses , and whether the new status will be subject to conditions other than length of residency .

CHARITY TEAMS UP WITH STUDENTS TO HELP HOMELESS CATS
Blue Cross pet charity has teamed up with Moreton Morrell College in Warwick to care for homeless cats and kittens until loving new homes can be found for them .
Cats will stay five double pens at the college where students studying courses in animal care and management will look after them , supervised by the lecturing team , until new homes can be found .
Katie Macalister , regional rehoming network manager at Blue Cross , said : “ We are delighted to be teaming up with Moreton Morrell College . Our partnerships with colleges give homeless cats the best chance of finding a new home , while helping students gain first-hand experience of looking after animals . So it really is win-win for all of us – including the cats !”
Jade Fox , 18 is studying towards a Level 3 Animal Management qualification at the college . She said : “ It is great having cats at the college . Helping them gives us the opportunity to put into practice everything that we are learning on our course . It is fantastic that this also helps a charity care for pets looking for homes .”
Three of the first cats to be admitted to the rehoming centre have already found loving new homes . The first cat to leave was Lulu , almost two-years-old who was rehomed by a Mr and Mrs Fleming .
PRACTICE PROMOTES STAFF DEVELOPMENT
The Pets ’ n ’ Vets Family network of veterinary practices with surgeries around Glasgow and surrounding areas issupporting its staff through veterinary development programmes with , it believes , one of the largest number of veterinary staff in Scotland enrolled in a variety of veterinary certificates .
The practice now has eight vets , three nurses and four animal nursing assistants undertaking various qualifications , including : certificates in emergency and critical care ; feline medicine and medicine . Oliver Jackson , a partner in The Pets ‘ n ’ Vets Family , said : “ Of all the locallyowned veterinary practices in the country , we feel we are leading the way in terms of supporting our staff through development programmes .
“ This really differentiates us insofar as we are a long established veterinary practice where veterinary surgeons can achieve their clinical aspirations in a locally-owned practice with the capacity to provide a comprehensive range of services and nurture their skills and personal development .
“ Add to this the fact that we doggedly retain the ‘ old fashioned ’ veterinary principles of ‘ clinical success rather than financial targets ’ and we feel we have an unbeatable combination .”
The Pets ’ n ’ Vets Family recently launched an enhanced new graduate programme .
The new . graduatevet programme ( or ‘ Dot ’ programme ) provides an innovative approach to new graduate training in Scotland with hands-on surgical training and friendly seminars from Advanced Veterinary Practitioners at the Pets ' n ' Vets Family ’ s Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Accredited Roundhouse Veterinary Hospital in Glasgow and a digital edge provided by a website accessible to all new and recent graduates ; www . new . graduatevet . co . uk
The Dot programme has now been enhanced further by the addition of new CPD elements and the provision of additional monthly benchmarking and seminars .
