La monumental catedral metropolitana de Panamá, cuyo nombre oficial es catedral basílica Santa María La Antigua, es la mayor representación arquitectónica panameña de la era colonial.

La Catedral viajera
Guía espiritual de la primera ciudad —y una de las más efímeras— española
en el continente, su asentamiento actual es el tercero, lo que convierte a la de
Panamá en la catedral más viajera del mundo.
S
e considera a Santa María
la Antigua del Darién, ca-
pital de la Gobernación de
Castilla del Oro, la primera ciu-
dad fundada por los colonizado-
res en tierra firme. La panameña
es heredera de su catedral, tam-
bién la primera continental, al
trasladarse la ciudad en 1520.
Tras la destrucción de Panamá
Viejo en 1671, vuelve a mudarse,
esta vez a su actual ubicación en
el Casco Antiguo, donde fue ini-
cialmente construida de madera.
Si contamos sus diferentes edi-
ficaciones, las reconstrucciones
por seísmos e incendios y la ac-
tual, es un monumento vivo que
lleva en constante cambio más de
quinientos años.

anta María the Old one of Darién
is considered, capital of the Gov-
ernorship of Castile of the Gold, the first
city founded by the colonizers in main-
land. The Panamanian is heiress of its
cathedral, also the first continental one,
when moving the city in 1520.
After the destruction of Panama Vie-
jo in 1671, it moves again, this time to
its present location in Casco Antiguo,
where it was initially built of wood. If we
count its different buildings, the recon-
structions by earthquakes and fires and
the present one, it is a living monument
that takes in constant change more than
five hundred years.
