LANDRY, PHD T he number of club sports teams at universities and colleges around the United States (U.S.) has been on the rise in recent years. These teams represent an opportunity for the collegiate athlete who desires more intense competition than is offered by intramural teams, but cannot or do not wish to commit to a varsity sport. Club teams compete against other college and university teams, and are often members of larger organizations. It has been estimated that 2 million students across the U.S. take part in club sports—a number which largely towers over the 450,000 athletes that participate in NCAA athletics (2,6).
