OPIOID CRISIS

In collaboration with other healthcare organizations in the Commonwealth , PSNA now offers a four-part online series addressing the opioid crisis in Pennsylvania . This education is FREE through the end of the year and easy to use . Each of the four sessions consists of four , 15-minute modules .
Please note that due to the extensive collaboration of this activity , the evaluation takes you through the Pennsylvania Medical Society as a non-physician member to obtain your certificate . It DOES count toward your 30 hours of CNE per renewal period . Please email education @ psna . org with any questions .

PSNA is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center ' s Commission on Accreditation .
Session 1 : " Prescribing Guidelines " Session 1 reviews the issue of opioid prescribing and details the importance of using evidence-based guidelines to ensure patient and community safety . This session includes a video introduction from Pennsylvania Physician General Rachel Levine , MD . Topics includes : ( 1 ) opioid therapy overview ; ( 2 ) opioids to treat chronic , non-cancer pain ; ( 3 ) emergency department acute pain treatment guidelines ; and ( 4 ) specialized service opioid prescribing and dispensing guidelines .
Session 2 : " Naloxone " Session 2 explores the use of naloxone as an opioid antidote . By the end of the session , you will be to : articulate the purpose of naloxone treatment and understand Act 139 and its role in the availability of naloxone . Topics include : ( 1 ) naloxone - opioid antidote ; ( 2 ) prescribing to first responders ; ( 3 ) working with members of the community ; and ( 4 ) how to use naloxone .
Session 3 : " Referral to Treatment " By the end of Session 3 , users will be able to discuss factors influencing substance use disorders , identify types of care and support , and describe levels of care available . Topics include : ( 1 ) treatment of substance use disorders ; ( 2 ) warm handoffs ; ( 3 ) dealing with challenges ; and ( 4 ) the role of the physician .
Session 4 : " PA ’ s Drug Monitoring Program " In Session 4 , users will explore how PDMPs can be used to make sure that prescription drugs are not overprescribed . Users will be able to articulate the need for a comprehensive program and identify how these programs increase the quality of patient care .
