Message from the President I write this column in reflection of those who have contributed in providing me the opportunity to serve as PSNA president. My sharing is an effort to articulate the power of legitimate and sincere professional mentorship. President: Mark Crider, PhD, MSN, RN Vice President: Tarik Khan, MSN, RN, FNP-BC PSNA presidents are privileged to provide their prospective through this column. I respect this understanding as I write today. With that, I would like to share my experience and gratitude of two of our colleagues who have recently passed. I would like to thank them for their service as my mentors. Dr. M. Louise Fitzpatrick, Connelly Endowed Dean of Villanova University’s College of Nursing, and Dr. Patrick Kenny, LPN Program Chair at Jersey College Nursing School, were both significant mentors in my professional nursing development. I met them both while an undergraduate nursing student and president of the Student Nurses Association of Pennsylvania (SNAP). Their mentorship helped me make decisions in my professional and personal development. I share this in honoring their contribution to our profession from a personal note, as well as their local, state, national, and international contributions. Dean Fitzpatrick and Dr. Kenny were early mentors in my career. The relationship we held was an outstanding example of the power of mentorship and how those benefits continue. Dean Fitzpatrick helped in my decision to study nursing education while working on my MSN at Villanova. Dr. Kenny taught me the importance of being my authentic self, both personally and professionally. My message: • • • • • Identify your mentors. Articulate your relationship. Learn and grow from their contribution. Celebrate your shared achievements. Honor the relationship when it ends, even if only in their leaving their living presence. These relationships are very special and unique to those who enter them. I wish each and every one of you the opportunity to experience at least once in your life and career the special relationship I felt I had with Dr.’s Fitzpatrick and Kenny. I hope that now, later in my career, I can pass it forward and become to others the mentor that I learned how to be from those who came before me.
