NCDHM Community Events
Tenth District
For many years, Dr. Dan Kastner and his staff
have visited their local elementary schools to
promote NCDHM and give oral health care
lessons. This year they visited many elementary
schools in the Pittsburgh area – Pine Richland,
North Hills, Deer Lakes, Hampton and North
Allegheny – and talked to Kindergarten
through third grades. They provided a half-hour
presentation that included a video, games and
a treat bag with new dental supplies that was
distributed to each student at the end of the
program. In particular, Dr. Kastner and his staff
promote the phrase, “Rethink your drink!” and
discussed with the students how much sugar
is in their soda and other drink choices.
Give Kids a Smile® (GKAS) is a national program
sponsored by the ADA to provide access to
care to low-income families. Although GKAS
is traditionally celebrated the first Friday in
February, GKAS events occur throughout the
year. In addition to the overall NCDHM efforts,
many of our PDA members donate their time
and services to people in need at GKAS events.

This year, the Allentown
site saw 18 children, and
performed 75 procedures
at a value of $6,475.
“Our children receive
comprehensive care. For any
child whose work is not
completed that same day,
the parents are offered the
opportunity to return for
completion of care at a highly
reduced fee if they do not have
dental insurance,” said Dr. Charles
Incalcaterra, director of the
General Practice Residency
Program at LVHN. Additional
children received care at the
Muhlenberg event on Feb. 23.
