Message from the President
I was recently privileged to represent PSNA membership at the 2018 meeting of the American Nurses Association ( ANA ) Membership Assembly in Washington , DC . PSNA continues to demonstrate strong leadership in ANA as the Pennsylvania constituent state nurse ’ s association ( CSNA ).
In addition to our current leadership , some members were recognized as national exemplars . With our history of national engagement as a CSNA , PSNA has had exceptional leaders who provide guidance and mentorship to other members , colleagues , and beyond . They are examples we aspire to achieve . Congratulations to our colleagues :
The Luther Christman Award recognizes the professional contributions of a man in nursing . This year ’ s recipient is PSNA member Richard A . Henker , PhD , RN , FAAN . This recognition is the latest in Dr . Henker ’ s awards and recognition of his national and international work , including the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists ( AANA ) and the Global Alliance for Surgical , Obstetric , Trauma , and Anesthesia Care ( G4 Alliance ). Dr . Henker has served as a member and co-chair of ANA ’ s Committee on Nursing Practice Standards . Dr . Henker is a professor in the Department of Nurse Anesthesia at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing .
PSNA Lifetime Member Marilyn D . Harris , MSN , RN , NEA-BC , FAAN is this year ’ s recipient of the ANA Distinguished Membership Award . This award recognizes outstanding leadership and participation in and contributions to the purposes of the ANA . Harris has been a leader in home health nursing for more than 50 years , edited six textbook editions , and authored numerous articles and columns . She served two terms as chair of the ANA workgroup in updating the Scope and Standards of Practice : Home Health Nursing . Retired from professional practice , Harris has continued her professional leadership to both ANA and PSNA . She is an honorary Board of Trustee member of the Nursing Foundation of Pennsylvania ( NFP ).
It was a moving moment for me to be present in hearing that one of my former professors and mentors was being inducted into the ANA Hall of Fame . This award recognizes the lifelong commitment of individual nurses to the profession and their impact on the health and social history of the U . S . M . Louise Fitzpatrick , EdD , RN , FAAN ( 1942-2017 ) is a visionary leader and champion for the nursing profession . Prior to her passing last August , Dr . Fitzpatrick was the Connelly Endowed Dean and Professor of the College of Nursing at Villanova University for nearly the past 40 years . Her service to all of education was provided in local , national , and international arenas . She served on boards of the American Association of Colleges , Mercy Health System , NLN , and Nurses Educational Funds , Inc ., and chaired the Cabinet of Nursing Education for the ANA .
Join me in congratulating these outstanding nurse leaders , PSNA members , and our colleagues . We thank them for all they have done and continue to do for our profession and our patients .
