SEEPEX Smart Conveying Technology
– a modern solution for an ancient monument
A
t over 3500 years old,
Stonehenge is one of the
oldest monuments in Britain,
the scale of which has
awed visitors for generations. The new
Visitors centre provides an insight into
the history of Stonehenge and has been
sensitively designed to preserve and
enhance the surroundings of the ancient
stones. It is likely to welcome over one
million visitors a year and improved
facilities were essential to cope with the
increase in effluent from these visitors.
SEEPEX Progressive cavity pumps fitted
with Smart Conveying Technology (SCT)
have been supplied to the new upgraded
waste water treatment system at the
Visitors centre.
English Heritage demanded a compact
solution with low noise emissions to
improve the environmental footprint
of the centre. The system, in a
containerised solution, incorporates a
Membrane Bio Reactor from Nijhuis
H20K, a specialist wastewater treatment
turnkey solution provider.
Recirculation of bio-solids sludge
produced required a pump with good
solids handling ability, which could

convey sludge mixed with screenings
at variable viscosities and often with
abrasive particles. Logistical challenges
came in the form of a small installation
space.
An SCT pump from SEEPEX was selected
to overcome these challenges; stator
adjustment enables pump performance
to be regained as wear from abrasive
sludge occurs, a compact footprint in
installation with in situ maintenance
fulfil the design criteria and lifecycle
costs are reduced due to fewer service
interventions.
