GARDENS A S AVA N N A H G A R D E N Old South Tradition Meets a Riverside Home S Savannah is known for its historic architecture, Spanish moss hanging from beautiful oak trees, its distinct squares and fabulous private homes and gardens. This lovely Georgia city also enjoys a long growth season due to partially tropical weather. Jennifer Melear, owner of Everbloom, Inc., was tasked with mixing the formal and informal elements of a Savannah landscape to design a traditionally “Old South” plan that also acknowledges the more casual location of a home situated on the marsh and the Burnside River. According to Jennifer, “We created a manicured foundation and filled in with plant varieties with a looser growth habit to create movement, as well as a variety of colors and textures in the foliage. The live oaks, mature azaleas and camellias are what you would expect in a Savannah garden, while the Japanese maple, holly ferns, plumbago, agapanthus and acanthus were planted to complement the more structured plants.” WRITTEN BY Blair Farris PHOTOGRAPHY BY Sarah Buck LANDSCAPE DESIGN BY Jennifer Melear SPRING 2016 15
