Mary Beth Hartsoe knows the meaning of a rough life. By the time she’s 15, her mother and eight of her siblings were dead, leaving her to care for her deaf brother her father, a Civil War veteran going insane. True to the form of a strong Southern woman, she perseveres and near the eve of World War I, she takes a job with the county courthouse. And when her cousin goes to fight in the war, Mary Beth is left as North Carolina’s first female sheriff.
