The Millennial Shift in Museum Design
Just a short drive from the Kimbell
is The Modern Art Museum of Fort
Worth. This museum is a serene place
to view art, and that would come as
no surprise to those familiar with
the work of Japanese architect Tadao
Ando, as his buildings promote a certain elegant, albeit commanding, calm.
He is a minimalist by nature both in
his selection of materials and in the
purity of his design, and he leverages
the natural surroundings of his buildings to enhance the experience one has
in the minimalist spaces he creates.
“The Modern” is classic Ando. The
museum is comprised of a quintet of
glass pavilions that appear to float on
a reflecting pool that surrounds the
entire space. Tall slabs of concrete,
Ando’s preferred material, tie the
five pavilions together, as do the “Y”
shaped columns which support the
