Myth Busters
Lesley Holland Downey
In skincare and makeup, advice is often fraught with misunderstanding…women
think there are some hard and fast rules about what to (or not to) use. When I worked
behind the makeup counter, I heard these all the time, from “I can’t wear red lipstick”
to “You should never wear powder if your skin is dry.” I thought it would be fun to
poll my experts on skin care and beauty to see what they hear from their clients that
are common misunderstandings.

I don’t need
moisturizer
because my
skin is oily.
Not true…your skin then
thinks it’s not getting enough
moisture so it produces more
oil. This can actually make
your skin worse—though
you should look for an oilfree moisturizer.

Myth
I don’t need
sunscreen
if I’m not
going to be
outdoors.
The sun can penetrate
through glass and most
clothing. Even if you’re just
walking to the mailbox or
driving in the car, over time
the sun exposure will really
do damage to your skin. Use
an SPF of 30 or higher daily.
