GARDENS Garden in the Sky The High Line is also home to a generous art collection. Friends of the High Line started the collection in 2009 by placing sculptures along the path. One of the more subtle art installations is “The River That Flows Both Ways,” located in the Chelsea Market Passage. This piece by Spencer Finch is a depiction of the ever-changing colors of the Hudson River on the windows of the buildings that form the passage. The installation honors the importance of the former rail line and the river. The color of each window frame is from a single pixel point from a series of photos made on the river in a single day. Like the Hudson itself, the window colors are constantly changing depending on time of day, the weather and the viewer’s perspective. DECEMBER 2013 77
