They recently have been commissioned by the Fashion District BID, a foundation created by the city and local businesses, to create five benches. The first is on 40th and Broadway. The benches are rough-hewn slate slabs placed on stainless steel structures. The slate is from the Cambrian geological period, 500 million years. The steel base structures, in design, refer to the rigorous geometric architecture of the surrounding buildings on Broadway. The stone, by contrast, brings “nature” to the area.
