A Taste of Wine
With temperatures on the rise,
many avid wine drinkers crave
cooler and more refreshing
drinks. And, I just want to say,
“Itʼs O.K.” It is acceptable to
occasionally enjoy a non-wine
beverage or a mixed wine bever-
age. This article focuses on a light and revitalizing
drink which blends wine and fruit juices…the glorious
SANGRIA. The traditional Sangria is a cold Spanish
drink of red wine, sugar, spices, fruit, and soda water
or lemonade, sometimes laced with rum or brandy.
After mixing, Sangria is typically chilled for a few
minutes to a few days, depending on the desired result.
You may also see a transformation of the wine cocktail
depending on the wines, fruits, and other alcoholic ad-
ditions used to make it. White Sangria is made with
orchard fruits and citrus blended with white sherry
and/or triple sec with a sweetener. A similar version
using a bubbly white wine instead of basic white wine
is also popular.
Sangria pairs well with grilled items such as burgers,
brats, white fish, and vegetables. Here is my favorite
and very simple recipe.
Ingredients: 1⁄2 apple chopped, 1⁄2 orange with rind on
cut in small pieces, 4 tablespoons brown sugar, 3⁄4 cup
orange juice, 1/3 cup brandy, 1 bottle dry Spanish red
wine, and 1 cup ice.
Instructions:
1. Add apples, oranges and sugar to a large
pitcher and stir.
2. Add orange juice and brandy and stir.
3. Add red wine and stir, then taste and adjust
flavor as needed. Stir to combine.
4. Add ice and stir. Chill it for at least 1 hour.
Garnish with orange segments (optional).
Happy tasting!
